American flat track in Belgium!
Round 5 of the International Mefo Sport Flattrack Cup was hosted by the Belgian Speedway fan club in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium, making it the first ever flattrack race in Europe’s capital country. The beautiful and well packed Helzold stadium welcomed new comers Piet-Gosse Hoekstra from Fryslan, Andreas Perr and Helly Kaltenhauser from Bavaria in addition to the regular rider field from England, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The qualifying races immediately produced close battles, with sixth place being fought for just as hard as first. The crowd was treated to a barrage of passing maneuvers, as riders were gaining and losing positions every lap. Unfortunately Mick Jansen and championship leader - hot shot - Steven Hall were forced to retire after making contact with the wall. Also the paddocks were well visited by the fans curious to see the beautiful big wheeled flat track motorcycles, some of them home built. The grid girls welcomed the best riders to the all deciding, twelve lap grand final with J.W. Jansen, Boast, Baldock and Mulder on the front row, ready to decide the day. England’s Peter Boast took the hole shot, with Swiss resident Jan-Willem Jansen right on his tail, they immediately opened up a little gap from the battle for third position. With Boast keeping the door shut, and Jansen looking, trying, poking left and right. It wasn’t until the second to last lap that Jansen found an opening while they were lapping other riders, to take first position and receive the checkered flag from Europe’s coolest flag Marshall Benny Kupers. Right behind them it was Dutchman Halbe Scheper who made his way through the field with a flawless race to claim his second podium of the season. Heusden-Zolder proved once again that flat track racing is an excellent spectator sport, keep checking the website for a race near you!
